Our History
San Rafael is one of 13 barangays located at the Poblacion area of Guagua. It is bounded on the north by Sto. Nino, on the east by Sta. Ursula, on the west by Bancal, on the south by the Municipality of Minalin. It has a total area 86.4656 has.
San Rafael during the early 19th century was an isolated sugarcane platation surrounded by waterways. A large territory of it was covered by fishponds. Mr. Rafael Carreon, a wealthy business czar who claimed ownership of the place was often visited by traders who anchored their ships in this islet. It being near the Yanco landing (where the Mercy clinic now stands), the only embarkation port of steamships, cargo boats transporting local and agricultural products from Manila that serves the province during that era. The isle attracted merchandisers and sight-seers who wanted a glimpse of the little suburb. Thu, the property was called Dock Island, a mooring place for water vessels traversing the water routes of Guagua. Another version of the story was that it was named "Duck" island because from a top view of the place it figures like a duck.
Years gone by in the outbreak of World War II, natives from Macabebe, Masantol and other neighboring towns sought refuge in this properly and started forming a small community. Dom Rafael Carreon who was known for his philantrophic spirit granted his migrant consideration to abode. Shortly, after his demise, folks requested to the Municipal Council of the town thu a barrio resolution the renaming of Dock Island to San Rafael. Today, the place is named San Rafael, and a complete elementary school also stand in this barrio. It celebrates its feast day every 1st day of May.
